ACT is hiring, we're looking for STUDENT Production Team leads for July – September 2019 to work on our 30 under 30 production of Footloose & Our ACT Youth Creative Program for 30 hours a week at $14/hour

As these 7 positions are made possible through the Canada Summer Jobs program of the Federal government, to be eligible to apply, you must be:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age;
  • have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible); and
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Student Musical Director

Role & Responsibilities – Responsible to the ACT board & Artistic Director. The work of the musical director is central to the production of the musical, since it is the musical director who ensures that the band and actors are prepared and sounding well together.

DUTIES:

  • Works with Director and ACT Board to arrange rehearsal schedule
  • Rehearses and prepares the actors
  • Prepared to spend the necessary rehearsal and preparation time
  • Submit all program information (Musical Director’s bio, pit band information) to the ACT Board three weeks prior to opening of the production
  • Recruit and hire musicians
  • Be in constant communication with the Director & ACT Board about all aspects of the production and if any problems or concerns arise
  • Work within the budget outlined by the ACT Board

Student Assistant Director

Looking for someone with a musical theatre background who is great with youth, and available
July & August including (but not limited to) these rehearsal days:
July 2 & 4 6:00pm – 8:30pm
July 9 & 11 6:00pm – 8:30pm
July 29 – August 1 9:00am – 5:00pm
August 19 – 22 9:00am – 5:00pm

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Previous day camp experience is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification is a definite asset.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
  • Musical Theatre background

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Assist the Director in providing a fun, safe, and healthy environment for children aged 7 – 15
  • Assist the Director in preparing all materials/supplies for all rehearsals activities to ensure
    smooth operation
  • Provide supervision and facilitate daily activities
  • Work alongside Director and special guest directors
  • Set-up/clean-up of facility and activities
  • Greet parents/guardians and campers on arrival and departure from rehearsal. Providing extra assistance as needed.
  • Provide attentive supervision and guidance for all youth
  • Exercise safety awareness and practices
  • Fill out accident/ incident reports when required and follow up as needed.
  • Be aware of any medical conditions within camp groups by reading through the medical packages distributed.
  • Respect and maintain equipment and supplies, and encourage camp participants to do the same.
  • Demonstrate and role model positive behavior at all times
  • Report to the Director any problems, concerns or emergencies that arise during rehearsals
  • Communicate all pertinent information (program changes, child behavior concerns, accidents and injuries) to the parents and/or guardians of the participant in a positive and professional manner.
  • Communicate and collaborate with co-workers to provide an engaging and well- organized program.
  • Carry first aid kit at all times

Student Marketing Assistant

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with ACT’s Marketing Director and Artistic Director to develop monthly campaigns and marketing materials
  • Support ACT’s ongoing interactive and visual design initiatives.
  • Act as a creative problem solver as needed by helping to determine appropriate design approaches for ACT programs and productions
  • Update and maintain ACT email database, create monthly newsletters and eblasts
  • Fundraising assistant and events coordinator
  • Media liaison and Publicity coordinator
  • Stay up to date on design trends, platforms, tools, and best practices.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • A personal computer is a requirement for this position

Student Costume Designer

The student costume designer collaborates with the director, and is responsible to the
producer.

DUTIES:

  • Collaborates with director on establishing a costume design
  • Collaborates with director, set and lighting designers on a colour palette
  • Creates colour sketches of people and clothing that communicate the final “look” of costumes
  • Takes measurements of all cast members
  • Buys, rents or borrows costumes and accessories (shoes, hats, gloves, jewelry, purses, etc.),
  • Adapts clothing to suit a character, and the actors’ activities (safety, comfort and moveability)
  • Sews costumes if necessary
  • Attends production meetings
  • Attends first rehearsal and presents design concept
  • Attends other rehearsals as available
  • Attends costume parade, dress rehearsals, etc.
  • Coordinates dressers for costume changes
  • Arranges to repair and clean costumes during the run
  • Supervises returns of any borrowed costumes or accessories
  • Works within a budget

Student Choreographer

  • Candidates must have prior experience teaching specific dance styles to all ages, have great communication skills, and be able to motivate and push the cast in a positive way
  • Styles include ballet, jazz, musical theater, hip hop, lyrical, African, Indian, and any other ethnic dance forms would be an asset
  • Collaborate will work closely with the Artistic Director and must be open to workshop and improvisation to develop the choreography for the show to ensure that it complements the overall vision
  • Must be very creative and flexible
  • Applicants who are selected for an interview must be ready to show choreography that shows his/her knowledge in the styles he/she can teach

Student Stage Manager

THE STUDENT STAGE MANAGER'S ROLE

The Student Stage Manager (SM) is key to creating an efficient and positive a production. Your ability to successfully lead and work with the theatre company.  This student position will be mentored by a professional Stage Manager so this is a great opportunity to learn and grow theatre production skills and techniques.  Your overall purpose is to work directly with the Senior Stage Manager, director, cast and production people to move a show from inception to closing.

WHO MAKES A GOOD STUDENT STAGE MANAGER?

  • Someone who is organized.
  • Someone who knows how to solve problems.
  • Someone who is willing to learn all aspects of the theatre:  lights, sound, props, set changes, make-up changes, and special effects.
  • Someone with a firm, kind, polite, respectful, and calm manner who can encourage and lead a large number of people to achieve a high standard of backstage discipline.

DUTIES:

  • Help organize rehearsals and performances (take attendance cast and crew)
  • Must attend all rehearsals and performances
  • Help call all rehearsals and take notes for prompt book
  • Assist with scheduling set-ups, strikes, load-ins and load-outs
  • Assist with the coordination and communication with all production leads to ensure that everyone is aligned with any production changes and updates
  • Assist with organizing the dressing rooms and backstage areas

Student Lighting Designer

We are searching for a Student Lighting Designer to work in the development of all lighting
design aspects of our upcoming production of Footloose.

DUTIES:

  • Creation and maintenance of lighting plots, ground plans and deck drawings
  • Work with other technical department staff to solve lighting and rigging problems
  • Research production specific equipment and products
  • Assist with lighting focus for daily change-over from one production to another
  • Watch performances to maintain artistic integrity of the lighting design
  • Coach follow spot cues during rehearsals and performances
  • Other duties as assigned for production by Director and Footloose production leads
  • Must have own computer
